Sensory Journals Take Us Into the Experience

What exactly is a sensory journal, you may ask? It’s a journal that engages all of our senses by using descriptive details of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures to capture our experiences. It’s like a traditional journal on steroids! It gives us a lot more than just a record of events, it paints a multidimensional picture for us.

In a sensory journal, you can record your experiences using all of your senses. For example, you can write about the colors you see in a sunset, the sounds of waves crashing at the beach, the smell of freshly baked cookies, the taste of a juicy watermelon, and the feel of sand between your toes. You can also use mindfulness as a framework for your sensory journal by taking a moment to focus on each sensation and really immerse yourself in the experience.

Using a sensory journal can be a lot of fun, but it can also be used for therapeutic and educational purposes. People with anxiety, sensory processing challenges, and other conditions can use sensory journals to relax and focus, learn about emotions, stimulate their senses, and develop self-awareness. Teachers and parents can also use sensory journals in the classroom or at home to achieve focused learning goals. By sharing your sensory journal experiences with others and encouraging them to do the same, you can create a community of sensory journalers who can learn from each other and share their unique perspectives.

FOREVER SUMMER MEMORIES

The summer sun beats down upon my skin,
A gentle breeze whispers sweetly in my ear,
The waves crash rhythmically, a soothing din,
As I am lulled to serenity, with all my gear.

The sand beneath my feet is warm and soft,
The smell of salt and sea fills my nose,
I am in awe of the beauty aloft,
The sun sets, and the sorbet sky glows.

My intent is clear: enjoy these dog days,
Revel in the sensory delight,
Let go of worries and accept the rays,
In this moment, so pure and so bright.

With dear loved ones by my side,
I bask in the warmth of their embrace,
And in this moment, I will not hide,
The joy and gratitude that fills this space.

Oh, how sweet it is to be alive,
To enjoy a sensory feast of summer,
And to savor every soiree that arrives,
For these memories, here will last forever …
