“The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has taken the idea of sensory fiction several stages further and offers a Science Fiction to Science Fabrication course. Using a range of sensors and tools, part of the studies include building a wearable connected book contraption in the form of a strap-on vest. This allows the reader to get fully in contact with the character’s emotions and physical states for a genuinely immersive reading experience. Selected passages trigger vibrations to influence heart rate, and the temperature of the vest can be similarly adjusted (for example making it warmer if you are reading about a sunny day). A compression element uses pressurised airbags to provide levels of constriction, and even the cover contains 150 LEDs which change appearance depending on what’s happening on the page.”

Sensory Resources

KultureCity® Sensory Inclusive™ Certification: To create acceptance and inclusion for all individuals with unique abilities. The KultureCity® Sensory Inclusive™ program allows individuals with autism and other sensory needs the ability to see and experience all the things the world has to offer. Why Sensory Inclusive™ vs sensory friendly? Sensory friendly limits accessibility to a specific time or location. It is harder to execute as staff have limited experience, and support tools are brought in only for the event and then removed. Why Sensory Inclusive™ vs sensory friendly? Sensory Inclusive™ Certification ensures daily accessibility not limited by time and location thus creating an accepting and inclusive community.  It is also easy to execute with staff training, and simple yet impactful modifications made to the location. The location will then always be Sensory Inclusive™.

“The researchers at the MIT Media Lab are working on a project called, ‘Sensory Fiction’ which allows readers to interact with books in a whole new way. By wearing a vest equipped with sensors, the book can change a user’s body temperature or heart rate to match what’s happening in the story. Andrew Dymburt (@CantPinTheDym) has more.” — b/60
